Frugal Formula....just say 'Baaaaaa...'

Yes, kitten season is upon us, and from now until at least the Fourth of July animal rescue will be inundated with kittens and puppies, too.   It's time to make sure we're ready for the emergency of  homeless kits and pups too young to eat on their own.  I remember how excited I was when I first found out about goat milk formulas.  What a savings over kitten and puppy milk replacers!  I keep a can of evaporated goat milk on the pantry shelf at all times.
There are many recipes for kitten formulas.  Some include gelatin, pedialyte and eggs, along with corn syrup.  I typically use the milk mixed half-and-half with water and warmed.  It is probably good to mix the milk with pedialyte if kittens are weak or slightly dehydrated.  I also use PetTinic vitamin drops as directed by my vet, to make sure the kittens' diet is adequate.
Here is a link to the Myerburg website's locator page, which will let you find a store nearby that stocks their goat milk products.

In southeastern NC, Harris Teeter grocery stores and WalMart super centers both have the canned goat milk on the baking aisle, near other evaporated milk products.  You can also order from the company's website.
