A dozen ways to help homeless pets in an hour or less…..
One minute: Visit www.theanimalrescuesite.com to give a bowl of food to a homeless pet. Just click on the purple button at the top of the page.
Two minutes: Clip the weight circle from any bag of Purina pet food. Put the circles in an envelope to deliver or mail to a participating animal rescue. They will be collected to redeem for food for the shelter or fostered animals. (Searching on Purina weight circles + rescue + ‘your state’ may bring up some rescue groups that are wishing for these!)
Three minutes: Register to use www.Goodsearch.com instead of other search engines. Fill in the blank with your favorite participating animal rescue group, and that group will benefit by getting a penny for every search you request. It adds up!
Four minutes: Share the importance of spaying and neutering pets with a friend or neighbor. Extra credit for sharing information about the nearest low-cost spay/neuter clinic….try the website www.SpayUSA.org to find your nearest clinic.
Five minutes: Choose a local animal from www.Petfinder.com to post in your social networking ‘status update.’ Ask friends to post it to their page, too. The extra visibility can help get that pet and others into great ‘forever homes.’
Ten minutes: Add a link to a local rescue group’s website in your email signature, and take time to ‘visit’ the site.
Fifteen minutes: After following the suggestion above, use links at that website to join and support the animal rescue group. Every rescue group needs people to make phone calls, do laundry, take photos, write articles….let them know what activity you could do, and the time you have available.
Twenty minutes: When shopping for items at most online stores, you can also use www.Goodsearch.com to donate a portion of your purchase to a participating animal rescue group. When you choose a gift for your human friends you will be giving a gift to the shelter animals, too!
Thirty minutes: Put a collection jar on the counter of your business, or ask the manager of one you visit regularly. Send a check for the donation amount to your favorite rescue group to help with medical care and adoption of homeless pets.
Forty minutes: Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper reminding readers to be responsible pet ‘parents.’ Share some of the ways you have found to help homeless pets, to encourage even more volunteers.
Fifty minutes: Visit an animal shelter or foster home and take a dog out for a walk, or play with the cats. Time outside is a luxury for the homeless dogs, and so helpful to their mental health. Well-exercised animals are more adoptable than those that have gone without regular play and companionship.
An hour: Volunteer to be a foster parent, so that more pets can be saved and re-homed from shelters. An hour or day or less is often all the pets need…..along with a safe and loving environment, and your TLC.
